Creating the Background Panel

To begin today’s card, I trimmed a piece of watercolor cardstock to measure 5-1/2” x 7-1/2”. Next, I used painter’s tape to adhere the watercolor cardstock to a hardboard.  Using a ¾” oval paint brush, I applied a heavy wash of water to the watercolor paper and while it was still wet began painting a layer of the Tundra Blue watercolor paint.  After rinsing my brush in clean water, I immediately began adding small “puddles” of the Deep Sea Blue and Tundra Violet watercolor paint in random dots across the watercolor cardstock.  Using a spray bottle, I misted a generous amount of water across the entire panel then picked it up and tilted it to one side to get the watercolors moving and began drying it with my WOW! Heat tool until completely dry.  Once dry, I used a #2 round brush and silver Iuile watercolor paint and began adding spatter to the watercolored panel.  I applied heat to the panel to dry the silver spatter and repeated the spattering process with Winsor & Newton white gouache.  After the panel was completely dry, I used the second to largest die from Spellbinders Precision Layering A2 A die set to die cut the watercolor panel and the largest die to die cut a piece of Gina K. Designs Onyx Black cardstock.

Creating the Focal Images

Using the Penny Black Immense Joy die, I die cut four JOY words from Cardstock Warehouse Stardream Silver cardstock.  I used Bearly Art Precision Craft Glue to adhere all four of the JOY words together and placed a large acrylic block on top and set them aside to allow the stacked words to dry.

I wanted to place a small snow globe scene in the center of the “O” in JOY, so I selected the Spellbinders Simon’s Snow Globe die set and die cut the back row of houses and group of three trees dies from Simon Says Stamp Snow White Pawsitively Velvet cardstock, the little light posts die from a scrap of matte silver metallic cardstock, the front snow bank from Altenew’s Moonstone Glitter Cardstock, the back drop circle die from vellum cardstock, the large house’s roof die was die cut from the Cardstock Warehouse Stardream cardstock (same cardstock as the word JOY), and lastly the large house was die cut from Aquarello Artistico Extra White Watercolor Paper.  I used Copic alcohol marker Y11 to carefully add a yellow tint to the windows of the large house die and added glue to random places on the trees followed by a nice layer of Distress Rock Candy glitter to make them sparkle.

Once the die cutting was completed, I began using liquid glue to adhere all the layers together for the snow globe scene then placed the scene behind the “O” and used a pencil to trace around the “O” and fussy cut around the trace line and glued the scene to the back side of the “O”.  I did add a few small pieces of Scrapbook Adhesives thin foam squares behind the trees and the large house so they were more level in the scene.

Finishing the Design

To complete the card, I added Scor-Tape to the back side of the watercolor panel and adhered it to the black cardstock panel.  Next, I glued the background panels to the front of an A2 size, top folding card base.  For the focal image, I added Altenew Instant Dimension Foam Tape to the back side of the “J” and “Y”, then added thin 3D foam squares behind the snow village and “O”.  Lastly, I glued a few Pink & Main White Iridescent sequins to the card front for that extra something special.

Creating the Card Front Panels

Using the Spellbinders Everlasting Squares die set, I selected the fifth largest die to cut a piece of matte silver metallic cardstock which ends up being 3.25” x 3.25” for my matting layer, then using the sixth largest die from this set I die cut a piece of white X-Press It cardstock (this will be the panel I stamp my images on).  Lastly, I used the second largest die from Spellbinders’ Perfect Touch Rectangles and Tag die set and die cut another piece of the white X-Press It cardstock for the panel that will be adhered directly to the A2 card base.  Normally, I don’t use X-Press It for matting layers; however, since I will be Copic coloring the images on X-Press It cardstock I needed my white cardstocks to match.

Creating the Focal Point

For my focal image, I used the snowman trio from Gina K. Designs’ Snowflake Kisses stamp set and Memento Tuxedo Black ink to stamp the image onto the square piece of X-Press It cardstock I cut in the step listed above.  These are the Copic alcohol marker color combinations I used:

Snowman Bodies & Snow on Ground:  B000

     Snowman Noses:  YR15, YR21

Blush on Cheeks:  R20 w/ white gel pen accents

     Green Scarf & Hat:  G19, YG09, G12, YG17, YG03, YG01

     Dark Pink Scarf & Hat:  RV19, RV25, RV21, C3, C1

     Light Pink Scarf & Hat:  R85, R81, RV00, C3, C0

Building the Sentiment

I used the “Sending Warm Winter Hugs” sentiment from the Gina K. Design’s Snowflake Kisses stamp set and stamped it to the lower center of the card.

Finishing the Design

To complete the card, I added Scor-Tape to the back side of the stamped/colored panel and adhered it to the matte silver metallic cardstock layer.  Next, I added Simon Says Stamp’s Big Momma Foam Tape to the back side of the silver metallic cardstock and adhered it to the largest white cardstock panel.  I added Altenew 1” x 1/16” Instant Dimension Foam Tape to the back of the card’s focal image “stack” and adhered it to the front of a light blue, side-folding, A2 card base.  My final touches were to add some white gel pen highlights here and there and added black Sakura Glaze to the eyes and buttons of the snowmen.

Hi crafty friends!  Today I am sharing a tag that could also be made into a card featuring some humorous and delightful stamps from AALL & Create.  This company makes some of the most adorable, whimsical stamps that I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with.   I went out on a ledge with a random number generator to pick the color scheme from Sarah Renae Clark’s Color Cubes for this tag and the winner was #4.  Not exactly screaming Christmas, but let’s see if we can make it work!

Creating the Card Front Background

I cut a piece of white cardstock to measure 4” x 6-1/2” to give me plenty of space for ink blending and to allow room to use the AALL & Create Hexalove die to cut the card front.  Next, I used the inner tag die from the Hexalove die set and used it to cut a 2” x 3” piece of the Spellbinders Antique Glitter Metallic cardstock so that the edges of the glitter cardstock align perfectly with the tag. I used my scissors to simply freehand a curvy edge on the top end of the glitter cardstock to represent a slight hill.

For the wintry sky, I used Ranger/Tim Holtz Distress Oxide inks in the colors Uncharted Mariner, Peacock Feathers, and Salvaged Patina.  I started ink blending at the top of the cardstock using Uncharted Mariner, then moved to Peacock Feathers, and lastly Salvaged Patina.  I worked my way up and down the cardstock, changing ink colors as necessary, until I obtained the look I was going for.  Once the ink had a chance to dry, I die cut the ink blended cardstock panel with the tag front die from the Hexalove die set.  To set the colors and help them to not bleed when I spatter with white paint, I went outside and lightly sprayed the inky tag panel using Krylon Workable Fixatif spray (you want to do this outside with lots of air flow!).  The Fixatif spray will also add a satin sheen to the cardstock versus the chalky finish you would get with the Distress Oxide inks… just in case you were wondering.  I allowed the Fixatif coating to completely dry then mixed a couple drops of water with some Winsor & Newton white gouache and spattered it across the tag background.  Once the spatter dried, I glued the metallic glitter cardstock panel to the bottom of the tag.

Using a piece of black cardstock from my scrap bin, I die cut the decorative tag die in the Hexalove die set to frame the inky background.  I glued the inked front panel to the decorative tag panel and set aside to dry.

Creating the Focal Point

My focal point for this card was the reindeer from AALL & Create’s Snow Good stamp set and the stack of three presents and one of the trees from AALL & Create’s Merry Little Things stamp set.   I’ll list the Copic markers used for each element below:

     Reindeer:  E19, E08, E97

     Reindeer Coat:  BG49, BG45 w/ E19 pocket, & Gold Posca buttons

     Reindeer Scarf:  YG63, YG61, YG11

     Reindeer Antlers:  E53, E51, E50

     Christmas Tree:  YG63, YG61, YG11, YG0000

     Tree Trunk:  E19, E08

Star on Tree:  Sakura Gold Metallic Gelly Roll Pen

     Christmas Gifts:  BF78, BF72, BG11 (blue)

                                YR18, YR12, YR82 (orange)

                                 BG78, BG49, BG45 (dark blue)

Once the coloring was completed, I fussy cut the images and used liquid glue to adhere four Trinity Stamps “High Dive Baubles” and four Trinity Stamps “Crystal Ball Baubles” to the Christmas tree in the place of ornaments.  When the glue dried, I added foam squares to the back of all the colored elements.

Building the Sentiment

Utilizing the small rectangular die from the Hexalove die set, I diecut a banner to hold the sentiment out of a scrap of white cardstock that I colored with Copic markers E08, E97, YR12, and E51.  Then from the AALL & Create Snow Good stamp set I stamped the sentiment that said “cutest reindeer of all” onto the rectangle die cut.  I loved the quirky, smudged look of this stamp and couldn’t resist using it as my sentiment.  Lastly, I added some foam squares to the back of the sentiment.

Finishing the Design

To complete the card, I removed the backing paper from the adhesive squares on all the Copic colored elements and adhered them to the card front.  Using a ¼” hole punch, I punched a hole at the top of the tag so it could be placed on a gift more easily.  My final touch was to add a bit of silver cord and white ribbon to the top to finish off the festive design.
